New boathouse for Senior School

St Peter’s School is located on the northern bank of the River Ouse west of York city centre.  The School has a long tradition of rowing within the Senior School going back to last century.

Although a boathouse necessarily needs to be close to the river, the existing boathouses were too close and became inundated when the river was in spate.  The only doors faced the river so that retrieving the boats in a flooding event posed problems.

O’Neill Associates achieved planning permission for a replacement boathouse, located on higher ground and with doors facing the river plus rear doors which created access in flood conditions.  Consent was also obtained for an upper boathouse, which acts as a repair workshop.

The site is within Green Belt and the zone 3 flood zone.  Ecological issues related to the finding of the rare Tansy Beetle which was present on the river bank were overcome in negotiations with the City Council.
