Planning permission granted for historic Roman Quarter development

Working with a multi-disciplinary team that included York Archaeological Trust, architects Vincent and Brown and heritage advisors Montagu Evans, O’Neill Associates co-ordinated the application for the Roman Quarter scheme, a mixed use de development comprising an aparthotel, 153 apartments 2,500sqm of office space and a new Roman Visitor Attraction (Eboracum).

The ground-breaking scheme will be one of the most significant development projects in York and will be a major boost to the regeneration of Rougier street. The development will be preceded by a 2 year once-in-a generation archaeological dig aimed at discovering more about York’s Roman ancestry. Little of York Roman remains have bene excavated and this dig is expected to add significantly to understanding this important era of the City’s past.

Following the dig, a new Roman Attraction will be built in the 8-metre-deep void created by the excavation. The Attraction will be run by York Archaeological trust who will use their 30 years’ experience of running Jorvik and expect to generate 500,000 visits a year.
Above the Roman Attraction, the aparthotel, offices, and apartments will be housed in two buildings on a plinth that will join all of the elements of the scheme together.
